Alongside
The Sea Show I am able to offer practical workshops
for schools.
Half
day - show + workshop session Full
day - show + 2 workshop sessions
Workshops
can be adapted for different years and key stages. They
can also be adapted for specific projects or topics.
Workshops
are for up to 30 children with teacher support
Puppet
making
Invent
your own puppet characters! Making
and operating simple rod puppets or shadow puppets from
easy-to-use materials. Learn
to make and operate a mermaid puppet, or create an underwater
landscape with shadow puppets. This
workshop develops drawing and design skills; using different
tools and materials; using shapes, space, pattern and
textures; working together in groups; increases individual
confidence and ability for other work in school.
Puppet
operation and performance
What
is a puppet? How do puppets work? What different kinds
of puppets are there? An opportunity
to operate some of the Squashbox Theatre puppets and
use them to tell a story or perform a short play. This
workshop develops language and narrative skills; using
character, action and narrative to convey story, themes
and emotions; speaking and listening; working together
in groups; increases individual confidence and ability
for other work in school.
Storytelling
and creating stories
What
is a story? How do stories work? Why do we like listening
to them? This
workshop looks at narrative and character, using some
of the puppet characters and themes from The Sea Show,
as well as traditional tales from Cornwall and Britain. Inventing
characters, making a story out of anything (an old boot
- who wore it?; a key - to what?), imaginary landscapes,
stories from pictures, dressing up… all ways of creating
and exploring stories. This
workshop develops language and narrative skills; speaking
and listening; working together in groups; increases
individual confidence and ability for other work in
school.
Drama
and improvisation
This
is a fun-filled practical workshop designed to help
children open up their imaginations and start improvising.
Using
light-hearted drama games and exercises we will explore
status, character, movement and chorus work. This
workshop develops language and narrative skills; role-playing;
speaking and listening; working together in groups;
increases individual confidence and ability for other
work in school.
Workshops
are also available for secondary schools (KS 3 &
4), colleges, nurseries, theatres, youth clubs and community
groups.
