"The
Works is offering strategic support to Squashbox
Theatre because the company produces exceptionally
high-quality work which tours to areas of
Cornwall currently under-served by touring
theatre. Craig Johnson’s performance is
compelling to adults and children alike
and is wholly inclusive to children of all
abiities. His style is very interactive
and engenders high levels of participation
in his audiences." Sarah
Pym, The Works:Dance & Theatre Cornwall
I
am currently offering four shows, The
Sea Show,
Skillywidden
Universarama!
and Stones
and Bones
Details of all four can be found below.
After
several years of touring theatre shows nationally,
I wanted to reconnect with Cornwall and
with my roots as a storyteller, puppeteer
and musician. My aims were to create high-quality
shows for children of primary school
age, and to promote the arts of puppetry
and storytelling through performance and
workshops. For many children the experience
of seeing a live performance in their school
is invaluable, especially for those whose
access to the arts is limited. Squashbox
Theatre gives pupils a chance to see small-scale,
intimate performances that are thought-provoking,
informative, surprising and funny, and which
use traditional skills in an innovative
way.
Since
I started Squashbox Theatre in 2007, The
Sea Show and Skillywidden have been performed
in over 100 schools in Cornwall and beyond.
I have also performed at countless fetes,
festivals, arts centres, village halls and
theatres, including two sell-out summer
seasons at the famous Minack Theatre near
Lands End.
Now
I have created Universarama!, a new show
aimed at older children (KS 2, 3 and 4)
and adults. Universarama! has all the humour,
fun and inventiveness of my other shows,
along with loads of incredible facts about
the universe.
