WHAT IS ‘
SKILLYWIDDEN’?

Legend has it there are five faery 'races' in Cornwall: the Small Folk, the Piskies, the Knockers, the Brownies and - most mischievous of all - the Spriggans.

Join our hero on a journey through the Cornish landscape as he searches for these elusive creatures - in ancient stone circles, old mine workings, fields, farmland, hedgerows and moors

Meet Skillywidden, the mischievous Pisky, and all of his faery friends!

Watch the dance of the ‘beautiful’ Faery Queen!

Marvel at the incredible Book Of Nature as it literally comes alive before your eyes!

Hear tales of Tom Trevorrow, Betty Stoggs, Coleman Gray and other strange characters from Cornish folklore!

Learn about bees, bats, birds and badgers, and discover the secrets of the Cornish countryside!

Skillywidden is a celebration of the wildlife and countryside of Cornwall, using Squashbox Theatre’s distinctive mix of puppets, songs, storytelling and cabaret, with a strong environmental message. More crazy characters, more silly slapstick, more tall tales and more fantastic facts!

WHY BOOK ‘SKILLWIDDEN’ FOR YOUR SCHOOL?    TOP OF PAGE

Traditional Cornish tales and folklore

Live music and songs - both traditional and original

Varying narrative styles and voices, colourful and descriptive language, imagery, metaphor, alliteration, song, rhyme, dialect, puns and word-play.

Different types of puppet and puppetry styles

Amazing facts about animals, plants, habitats and ecosystems

Underlying themes of conservation, ecology and care for the environment

I intend to show how legends and stories are rooted in the environment, and use local folklore to encourage awareness of Cornwall’s unique heritage and ‘Sense of Place‘.

I want to explore the concept of Diversity using different types of Cornish faery as examples: how their differences make them unique and special, but how they can learn to co-exist peacefully.

I will also look at the wondrous yet fragile ecology of the British countryside, and show how our actions can make a difference, both good and bad.

Skillywidden’s themes will be cross-curricular, encompassing:

English / literacy (telling stories, speaking & listening)

Science (animal and plant life, conservation, habitats)

Art & design (making puppets)

Geography & History (Cornwall / A Sense of Place)

Citizenship (social responsibility, care for the environment, recycling, littering)

Music

Creativity
